Fort Reno

Interesting evidence from Fort Reno Tours!

Travel to another era when you visit the beautiful settings of Fort Reno in El Reno, Oklahoma.  Located a few miles west of Oklahoma City, Fort Reno opens its heart to people of all ages and offers a rich and interesting historical account of a time when cowboys and Native Americans roamed the untamed lands.  Tour the facilities with Fort historians while they give a fabulous account of a time gone past and members of Rip Studies recalling paranormal activity witnessed and recorded in the present.

Fort Reno was a military camp consisting of both infantry and cavalry troops built in 1874.  In fact, Fort Reno was the largest cavalry unit in existence, sending horses and mules all over the world in support of US Army units.  It was also the base for settlement within the territory of Oklahoma for landruns during 1889, 1892 and 1894.  It was the base for a troop of Buffalo Soldiers, named by the Indians for their dark skin and black hair.  It also housed a large population of German and Italian POWs, who unlike the POWs of recent led very happy lives working both on the base and at local family farms for pay.  The POWs built the church still located on the grounds.  Several buildings have been demolished due to the lack of upkeep.  However, current buildings are being renovated and great care is being taken to maintain their nostalgic appearance.

Current buildings include: 3 Officer's Quarters (one the home of the Visitor's Center), Victorian House (once was Officer's Quarters), Adjunct Building, Church, Cavalry Mess Halls, Guard House, Commisary and Hospital (now the home for Federal Government Ag Offices).  Along with the buildings, the Fort maintains a cemetery with graves dating from the late 1800s until 1940s.
